Computer Network Faq's
1. Wired versus wireless?
Having the freedom to log onto the internet from any location within the office sounds very appealing. However, wireless networks have some drawbacks. Wireless signals are not very reliable and result in more problems and service calls and the download speeds over the wireless network is slower than if a computer is hardwired. Some buildings are unable to receive a wireless internet connection because of there location, walls or internal structures; the signal can not always be detected. At Creed Technology, we recommend running cable internet as it provides increased business performance as a result of faster signal speeds and reduced repair maintenance.
2. What computer systemm should I purchase?
Office equipment is a big investment. At Creed Technology we strongly recommend consulting with a Network Specialist before making such important purchases. Scheduling an in-office meeting with a Network Specialist to discuss your business needs can get you set-up with the best system for your budget save you time and money in the long run.
3. Is a battery backup worth it?
Electrical disturbances and power outages caused by wind, storms and accidents can happen anytime. At Creed Technology we strongly recommend incorporating a battery backup system for you office equipment. There are power flickers all the time that happen (even ones we do not see) and overtime this can wear on your computer if not protected. Also, in the event of a power outage a battery will shut your computer down properly saving the hardware from damage along with your data. The installation of a backup battery eliminates the inconvenience of lost data and computer damage. It is especially important if you do not perform computer backups daily as the data on your harddrive is not always recoverable.
4. How do I safeguard my computer from viruses and spyware?
Viruses and spyware can invade your privacy, bombard you with pop-up windows, slow down your computer, and even make your computer crash. They are getting smarter all the time so it is critical to install a firewall to protect your business from the malicious invasion. There are many variations of firewall, (free, desktop, software & hardware). .Each has a slightly different application. When looking to install a firewall, there is no simple answer. The best approach is to have a professionsl assessment of your business system to determine the best configuration?
5. Why is computer security important?
Simply stated, the goal of computer security is to keep your computer-based possessions - your computer system (CPU cycles, memory, disk space, and Internet connectivity and speed), the software you've purchased, and the files and folders you've created - yours unless and until you explicitly give them to others. Technology changes rapidly, as do the ways intruders take advantage of that technology. Every business requires its own level of computer security meausures. At Creed Technology we will assess you business needs and recommend safeguards to protect your computer resources as well as keep you informed of technological advances with security measures so you can keep what belongs to you yours until you say otherwise!
6. Shared computer - business and family?
Don't let children use your business computer without your supervision. Ideally, you should not allow your children to use your home office computer. We have seen machines that are infected continually because kids are playing games via the internet, downloading music, videos or other software that can have a virus hidden within. So if someone continually works from home we always recommend, if money is available, to purchase a separate computer for fami.ly use. If your computer needs to serve both your business and family, be sure to supervise your children whenever they use it. Teach older children not to download programs or open e-mail attachments without your permission.
